We work very closely with Salford, Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan and UCLAN universities to enable students on BA and MA social work degrees to access placements which are necessary to complete their courses. Students on various mental health courses also very welcome to work in our drop-ins to gain relevant experience for their courses. Cadet Nurses are welcomed into our drop-ins on their nursing courses to gain experience.
We are happy the provide placements for students on social work degrees.
This includes BA & MA courses.
Evidence for your key roles can be gained from the fallowing areas.
KEY ROLE 1: prepare for, and work with individual, families, carers, groups and communities to access their needs and circumstances.
Unit 1 Prepare for social work contact and involvement.
1. Liaison with staff for preparation to work with members.
2. Informal assessment of individuals or groups to prepare for working within the drop-ins.
Unit 2 Work with individuals, families, carers, groups and communities to help them make informed decisions.
1. Encourage members to suggest future inclusions into the drop-in programme.
2. Encourage groups to make informed decisions about the way forward.
Unit 3 Assess needs and options to recommend a course of action.
1. Assess needs for individuals on the Dark Horse/ Oak Tree and prepare future, negotiated goals.
2. Each student can choose a project which is negotiated with staff and members, planned, implemented and evaluated.
KEY ROLE 2: Plan, carry out, review and evaluate social work practice, with individual, families, carers, groups, communities and other professionals.
Unit 4 Respond to crisis situations.
If any crisis arises, the student can sign post the member to specialist services, advocate for that member or liaise with staff towards a satisfactory conclusion.
Unit 5 Interact with individual, families, carers, groups and communities to achieve change and development and to improve life opportunities.
By supporting members on the Dark Horse/ Oak Tree foundation, new skills and knowledge will be obtained, this is done on an individual or group basis.
Unit 6 Prepare, Produce, implement and evaluate plans with individuals, families, carers, group and communities and professional colleagues.
1. Individual plans negotiated with members, for their progression.
2. Each student’s project will encompass this.
Unit 7 Support the development of networks to meet assessed needs and planed outcomes.
Investigating the work of other agencies in Bolton will give students the knowledge of networks which can support members.
Unit 8 work with groups to promote individual growth, development and independence.
Supporting one member within a group activity.
Unit 9 address behaviour which presents a risk to individuals, families, carers, groups and communities.
As the need arises, students will be involved in assessing and addressing behavioural problems.
KEY ROLE 3 support individuals to represent their needs, views and circumstances.
Unit 10 advocate with and on behalf of, individuals, families, carers, groups and communities.
Members will regularly ask for assistance with gas/electric bills, housing issues, benefit problems etc.
Unit 11 prepare for and participate in decision-making forums.
1. Report of projects are prepared for the partnership group meetings and presented to the meeting.
2. Questionnaires on a variety of subjects are regularly completed.
KEY ROLE 4 Managers risk to individuals, families carers, groups, communities, self and colleagues.
Unit 12 Assess and manage risks to individuals, families, carers, groups and communities.
Risk assessments and prepared for any activities including all students projects.
Unit 13 Assess, minimise and manage risk to self and colleagues.
Included in the risk assessments are potential risks to individuals, the student will always have 2 staff members with them.
KEY ROLE 5 Manage and be accountable, with supervision and support, for your own social work practice within your organisation.
Unit 14 Manage and be accountable for your own work
Each student will be able to manage and be accountable for their own project.
Unit 15 Contribute to the management of resources and services
Each student will manage resources within their own project and are welcome to contribute to the partnership group meeting.
Unit 16 Manage, present and share records and reports
Each project will necessitate management, implementation and evaluation which are presented to management or members.
Unit 17 Work within multidisciplinary and multi-organisational teams, networks and systems.
Drop-in staff and students work with Social workers, CPNS, benefit staff, other agencies, carers, families etc.
KEY ROLE 6 Demonstrate professional competence in social work practice.
Unit 18 Research, analyse, evaluate, and use current knowledge of best social work practice.
This is done throughout the placement in all aspects, peer groups and supervision assists progression.
Unit 19 Work within agreed standards of social work practice and ensure own professional development.
Students progress in skills and knowledge, peer group discussions and supervisions.
Unit 20 Manage complex ethical issues, dilemmas and conflicts.
This is always a subject for supervisions. Students usually encounter confidentially issues.
Unit 21 Contribute to the promotion of best social work practice.
Throughout the placement students are guided by peer group sessions and supervision for working with individuals or groups within the drop-ins. This is then put in the everyday workings of drop-ins.
During the placement you will have the opportunity to work in several of our drop-ins, with shared interest groups and the many other activities BAND facilatate.
You will work with workplace supervisor, and an offsite practice tutor, who will guide you through your placement and help you to produce a portfolio that is acceptable to your assessment panel.
